Alternative Therapies

Reiki

I have had an interest in alternative therapies for a number of years since I was diagnosed with demyelinating disease in 2008. It was apparent to me that my symptoms were much worse when I was stressed or tired. This took me on a journey of self-healing and I became intrigued with Reiki as a self healing tool when a friend and I attended a small holistic fair. A lady was offering Reiki taster sessions. I had vaguely heard of Reiki but never tried it. I decided to give it a go and although in this particular case the therapist used non-contact Reiki, the effect blew me away. I was completely grounded and thoroughly relaxed and the feeling stayed with me the rest of the day.

This led to me training in Reiki 1 in 2012 for self healing and Reiki 2 the following year, practitioner level. There are many types of Reiki but I have trained and remain with the method taught by Dr Mikau Usui who ‘re-discovered’ Reiki after a 21 day fasting & prayer practice on Mt Kumara near Kyoto. Reiki is a form of healing where the healer connects the receiver to the ‘universal life force’ known as ‘Chi’. The experience can bring a complete sense of calm and relaxation and in many cases can support a persons life decisions when making improvements to their health and wellbeing. Reiki can also complement conventional medicine but is not an alternative and should not be replaced by advice from a trained medic/doctor.

Reiki is non-invasive, non-diagnostic and no pressure is applied. A person will be fully clothed and can choose to be sitting or lying down. The application of Reiki can be non-contact or hands on, lightly touching areas of the body. Every session is unique and sometimes very strong energy/sensations can be felt and sometimes just a subtle lift in energy levels and a sense of calm. Whatever sensations you feel with Reiki the overriding experience will be a balance in your body, mind, spiritual and emotional levels.

Indian Head Massage

I am a trained Indian Head Massage therapist with a Guild Training International qualification.

I decided to learn IHM to help my partner manage the pain he experienced with Fibromyalgia. Although he experienced pain through out his body he particularly felt pain in the base of his skull and would ask me to massage there regularly. This eventually brought me to the decision to train in IHM so I could help him through this ancient healing technique. IHM, also known as “Champissage” has been practiced for thousands of years and has been a vital part of family life in India. Children were taught at an early age to give and receive IHM so there was a strong bond in the family. Women in the family would give and receive together in a circle as it would produce lustrous, healthy hair.

The technique used today in Britain was developed by Narendra Mehta who studied the different techniques used in various parts of Indian society and developed an holistic method to restore the body’s energy balance and bring calm and relaxation. It focuses on the upper back, upper arms, shoulders, neck, scalp and face and whilst is considered a massage it is actually working with the chakras and marma points (energy points) to restore balance.

As with Reiki, the client will be seated and fully clothed. The massage is hands on using gentle motions and oils can be applied to the scalp at the discretion of the client. The massage is soothing and brings a sense of calm and can alleviate pains such as headaches, migraines and muscle pains. As with Reiki, IHM is an alternative therapy to compliment conventional treatments and medicines and is not a replacement.
